Memory spec terms If you're not sure if a module is right for your system, use the for a list of guaranteed compatible modules. NON-ECC/Non-parity Most desktop and laptop computers take NON-ECC or Non-parity memory. ECC/Parity ECC or parity modules look for errors in data and are most often found in servers and other mission-critical applications used by large networks and businesses. Unbuffered Most PCs and workstations use unbuffered memory which is faster than registered memory. Registered/Buffered Registered or buffered modules delay all information transferred to the module by one clock cycle. This type of memory is primarily used in servers. Fully buffered Designed for next-generation servers, features an advanced memory buffer.

CL —CAS (column address strobe) latency, which is the number of clock cycles it takes before data starts to flow after a command is received. Lower CL is faster.

Modules with different CL can be mixed on a system, but the system will only run at the highest (slowest) CL. Component configuration —(For example: 64Meg x 64) Indicates the size of the memory chip components on the module.

Voltage For example 2.6V. Indicates the power used by the module. The lower the better.

Though the original 4GB of memory worked well, I did notice that the system was regularly using page-outs to the virtual memory. So, I decided to upgrade to 8 GB. I researched several different companies and the end result was that Crucial had a fabulous reputation, which eased my concern with buying non-Apple memory.

Crucial could not have made it easier. Their on-line scanner, should you need it, will tell you exactly what you need. When I had a question about the memory modules, the staff responded quickly with great answers.

The memory arrived, I installed it in about 10 minutes, ran some tests, and now I'm cruising along. As someone who is very careful about what he buys, I can wholeheartedly recommend Crucial. Comments about Crucial 8GB Kit (2 x 4GB) DDR3L-1333 SODIMM Memory for Mac: Crucial 8GB Kit (2 x 4GB) DDR3L-1333 SODIMM Memory for Mac Upgrade for: Apple iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2010) iMac11,2 Crucial part number: CT8914094 or CT2K4G3S1339M This memory, once it arrived, was easy to install in the iMac. Simply removed the plate on the bottom with three screws and gently with quite a bit of slow wiggle force pushed the memory into the two available slots of course following basic static precautions. Then put the plate back on plugged it in and started it with no settings adjustments of any kind needed. The total of 12 GB (4+8) was properly recognized by the system.

Then I did a thorough memory check using Memtest86. Memtest86 ran its default (check everything) for 9 hours and 4 complete memory passes and found no memory faults. I have been using the computer for a few day with no hiccups or problems of any sort opening dozens of tabs in browsers while making big presentations and other programs open in the back simultaneously with no problems occurring. So, I am very pleased with this memory purchase. Comments about Crucial 8GB Kit (2 x 4GB) DDR3L-1333 SODIMM Memory for Mac: I used this to upgrade my mac mini mid 2011, from the native 2gb ram to 8gb ram. This is sufficient for most applications on this system and is a marked improvement over what came on it; at more than twice what comes on it. So for most things - internet, startup etc.

This is fine and would have been enough. However if you are doing video editing I would advise to go ahead and max out your gb's to the maximum 16 (2-8gb pieces).

This will give you enough to cover at least basic video editing without pulling your hair out. This is done at little more cost than the 8gb that this supplies. Other than video editing the extra 8gb's doesn't seem to help with much else. So if you don't do video editing save the cash this 8gb set should be just fine, if you do it is worth the little extra to spring for the 16gb set.
